Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, said Indians living outside their homeland will also be now eligible to enter Malaysia visa-free as tourists. He said that their Cabinet’s decision to offer this facility to NRI (non-resident Indian) tourists was proper since the same was being extended to citizens of India, and this would encourage the former to travel to Malaysia.

 

Free Malaysia Today quotes Zahid as telling the Malaysian media on 5 February that they welcomed NRIs to tour Malaysia and added that this would enhance their foreign exchange revenues as tourist arrivals would increase. Zahid, who is also Malaysia’s home minister, said that as passengers have to go through APSS (Airline Passenger Security Screening) before being allowed entry into this Southeast Asian country, this would not imply that the security of Malaysia would be compromised. This move could make most of the about 500,000 expatriate Indians who are working in Qatar as professionals, businessmen and executives plan a trip to Malaysia, he said.

 

As the chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Tourism, Zahidi said that he was in Qatar to lure tourists from that Arab country to Malaysia. He said that Malaysia was able to receive only 5,000 tourists from Qatar in 2016. There was a need to ramp-up endeavours to attract more tourists from West Asia with the aid and cooperation of travel companies and agents, said Zahid.
